Mattson Two Benefit Concert

This is from the Shakas and Singlefins Blog from Ryan Tarter
Hello friends,
As some of you may or may not know, Jan and Arlene Mattson have had some health problems lately. Arlene had surgery two weeks ago to remove a brain tumor that had grown back after 15 years. She is still in northern California recovering and is expected to be back home in about four weeks.
Jan was recently diagnosed with colon cancer. He went in for an outpatient procedure last Friday to remove the cancerous tumor. The surgery did not go as expected. The surgeon was unable to remove the tumor and caused an ulcer to bleed during surgery. They could not get the bleeding to stop since the tumor was in the way, so they admitted Jan to the hospital with severe internal bleeding. The doctors told Jan he would not make it but miraculously the ulcer stopped bleeding on it’s own and Jan has been getting better everyday since. He is now back at home slowly recovering so he is strong enough for a second attempt at removing the tumor.
Both Jan and Arlene are self -employed and are not able to work right now. Bills are beginning to accumulate and we are reaching out to you, as friends, to help support this wonderful couple.
Please see the flyer below for info on the benefit show we are hosting for them. I realize that times are financially tough for all of us right now, but any and everything is helpful at this point. If you are unable to attend the show but would still like to make a donation, please send it to . . .

Bustin Down the door opens Surfing Heritage Foundation's 2009 season

San Clemente, California. Surfing greats Shaun Tomson, Peter “PT” Townend, Ian Cairns and Michael Tomson were on hand to share the spotlight this past Tuesday evening discussing their Hawaiian exploits of the seventies. The topic of the evening was their documentary film called “Bustin down the door”. The film captures how this group of Australians and South Africans set out to change the world of surfing by bringing to it a higher level of professionalism, thus beginning the shift toward the billion dollar surf industry we know today.
Three decades have past when this team first landed in Hawaii to stake their claim as the best surfers in the world. Through essays written by themselves and wonderful photography from the lens of Dan Merkel, Oahu’s North Shore is captured as time machine of the sport.
The evening that was free to the public and featured a slideshow, Q&A, book and DVD signing, and limited-edition framed photographs featured in the book.

Gathering of the Tribes comes to an end

Church Beach, California
January 3 and 4, 2009.
The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association’s 13th annual Gathering of the Tribes event came to a close last Sunday afternoon with an amazing series of hotly contested finals. Several inspired performances and great last minute clutch surfing that capped off the two day classic.
In the girls 14 and under competition, Hallie Rohr of the Doheny club bested Makala Smith of the Oceanside group with an amazing series of linked moves and great wave selection. The men’s 20 to 29 age group featured over-the top surfing from both Tyler Warren and Bucky Barry of Doheny and eventual winner Steve Newton of Oceanside. The weekend conditions consisted of everything mother nature could drum up from rough wind-chopped waves on Saturday to choice 3 to 6 foot glassy peelers on Sunday. The conditions for the final were the perfect backdrop for classic longboard surfing.
This year’s event consisted of two competitive surfing areas that were judged simultaneously by two separate judging stations. The configuration enabled over 350 contestants from over 18 Longboard Coalition Teams to surf and work their way to the finals on Sunday afternoon.
The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association has held the Gathering of the Tribes surf event for 13 years and sets the tone for the coming year of club competition. This year’s program was no exception. Jack Sutter, Doheny Longboard Club President, stated,” This year’s event was especially exciting because we were able to add a Stand Up Paddle (SUP) division that showed just how far the sport has come with their exceptional wave surfing abilities”.
The Coalition of Surfing Clubs (CSC) is an international organization that represents the interests of surfing clubs throughout California and the world. It acts as a united voice to address issues related to coastal water quality, beach access, development, and legislative policy. The Coalition represents over 10,000 surfers of all ages and exists for the betterment of the citizenship of the surfer, to improve clean water locally and globally and to promote the sport of surfing.
The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association is an organization comprised of individuals dedicated to the enjoyment of board surfing in a clean and natural environment. In relation to that philosophy, the DLSA will act as a support group to other organizations with similar views and objectives. For additional information contact Denny Michael at dlsa10@hotmail.com
