Along the trials to Trestles you will find...
Phoenix canariensis is a species in the palm family, Arecaceae, native to the Canary Islands. It is a relative of Phoenix dactylifera, the true date palm. It is a large solitary palm, 10-20(-40) m tall. The leaves are pinnate, 4-6 m long, with 80-100 leaflets on each side of the central rachis. The fruit is an oval, yellow to orange drupe 2 cm long and 1 cm diameter and containing a single large seed; the fruit pulp is edible but too thin to be worth eating.
The most used common name in English is "Canary Island Date Palm". The common name in Spanish speaking countries and in the Canary Islands is "Palmera Canaria".

Surfing Heritage Foundation Roasts its own
1st Annual Event Honor’s Founders Dick Metz and Spencer Croul
This past Sunday evening the Surfing Heritage Foundation started a tradition that’s bound to go down in the annuals of surf lore as one of the most irreverent evenings of all time. Perhaps the infamous Master of Ceremonies, Robert “Wingnut” Weaver, said it best, “"This is the first ever roast in the sport of surfing and it’s about time we cooked some of our sport's most cherished characters!"
And cook it was as surf legends Greg Noll, Bruce Brown, and Hobie Alter skewered the roasted in a rousing session of jokes, tall tales and antidotes about their lives both true and complete fiction. Nothing was sacred and nothing was sparred. It was a very special evening that was both humorous and generous at the same time. The audience was a broad cross section of some of surfing’s greatest pioneers from the east coast to Hawaii who all shared a great evening together.
Bruce Brown, who created the iconic surf film The Endless Summer, spoke about how Dick Metz was the original inspiration for the film having traveled around the world years before. Big wave legend Greg Noll reminisced about how Spencer Croul searched and found the first surfboard Greg had ever shaped and gave it back to him as a gesture of friendship.
It was truly a great beginning to what will become an annual fundraiser for the Surfing Heritage Foundation.
About the Roasted:
Surfing Heritage Founder, Dick Metz, is a long time surfer from Laguna Beach, who tipped legendary surfing documentary producer, Bruce Brown about South Africa, where he filmed the most spectacular segment for his seminal 1965 film, "The Endless Summer". Later, Dick partnered with Hobie Alter to establish Hobie Sports, the first successful chain of surf & sport retail outlets. During those years, Dick began collecting the historical surfboards that help comprise the nucleus of the current Foundation collection. Metz established the 501(c)(3) foundation in 1998, as a lasting home for his collection.
Co-founder, Spencer Croul, a Newport Beach surfer and active surfboard collector whose family founded Behr Paint, teamed with Metz, and they combined their collections into the largest, most significant in the world. Spencer also provides the facility in which the Foundation currently operates. The on-going contributions of both men, as well as a prominent Board, dedicated staff, and a host of volunteers have brought The Surfing Heritage Foundation to its current position as the surfing world's most renowned archiving and preservation effort.

Surfing Heritage Foundation Roast this weekend
February 26, 2009
PRESS RELEASE
Created as a fun and ribald fund-raiser for the Surfing Heritage Foundation, this special night will feature the always-irreverent emcee, surf personality Robert "Wingnut" Weaver, with a celebrated roster of roasters including Greg Noll, Bruce Brown, and Hobie Alter.
"This will be the first ever Roast in the sport of surfing. It's about time we cooked some of our sport's most cherished characters!"
Special auction items: A week at an architecturally unique Baja surf pad, a weekend of perfect surf with Wingnut & Micky Munoz at "The Hollister Ranch", a rare collection of historical fine art photo prints from the Foundation's archive, a thrilling private flight on a restored P-51 WWII fighter aircraft, and a whale watching cruise for four aboard a lavish private yacht followed by dinner and drinks at the Wind & Sea Restaurant.
The Surfing Heritage Foundation preserves wave-riding history and culture via the collecting and archiving of historical surf craft, photography, oral histories, films and videos, artwork, printed matter, and other items of significance. As the earliest of our sport's pioneers depart, their memories and historical perspectives leave as well, unless we can save them for future generations.

Mattson Two Benefit Concert

This is from the Shakas and Singlefins Blog from Ryan Tarter
Hello friends,
As some of you may or may not know, Jan and Arlene Mattson have had some health problems lately. Arlene had surgery two weeks ago to remove a brain tumor that had grown back after 15 years. She is still in northern California recovering and is expected to be back home in about four weeks.
Jan was recently diagnosed with colon cancer. He went in for an outpatient procedure last Friday to remove the cancerous tumor. The surgery did not go as expected. The surgeon was unable to remove the tumor and caused an ulcer to bleed during surgery. They could not get the bleeding to stop since the tumor was in the way, so they admitted Jan to the hospital with severe internal bleeding. The doctors told Jan he would not make it but miraculously the ulcer stopped bleeding on it’s own and Jan has been getting better everyday since. He is now back at home slowly recovering so he is strong enough for a second attempt at removing the tumor.
Both Jan and Arlene are self -employed and are not able to work right now. Bills are beginning to accumulate and we are reaching out to you, as friends, to help support this wonderful couple.
Please see the flyer below for info on the benefit show we are hosting for them. I realize that times are financially tough for all of us right now, but any and everything is helpful at this point. If you are unable to attend the show but would still like to make a donation, please send it to . . .

Bustin Down the door opens Surfing Heritage Foundation's 2009 season

San Clemente, California. Surfing greats Shaun Tomson, Peter “PT” Townend, Ian Cairns and Michael Tomson were on hand to share the spotlight this past Tuesday evening discussing their Hawaiian exploits of the seventies. The topic of the evening was their documentary film called “Bustin down the door”. The film captures how this group of Australians and South Africans set out to change the world of surfing by bringing to it a higher level of professionalism, thus beginning the shift toward the billion dollar surf industry we know today.
Three decades have past when this team first landed in Hawaii to stake their claim as the best surfers in the world. Through essays written by themselves and wonderful photography from the lens of Dan Merkel, Oahu’s North Shore is captured as time machine of the sport.
The evening that was free to the public and featured a slideshow, Q&A, book and DVD signing, and limited-edition framed photographs featured in the book.

Gathering of the Tribes comes to an end

Church Beach, California
January 3 and 4, 2009.
The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association’s 13th annual Gathering of the Tribes event came to a close last Sunday afternoon with an amazing series of hotly contested finals. Several inspired performances and great last minute clutch surfing that capped off the two day classic.
In the girls 14 and under competition, Hallie Rohr of the Doheny club bested Makala Smith of the Oceanside group with an amazing series of linked moves and great wave selection. The men’s 20 to 29 age group featured over-the top surfing from both Tyler Warren and Bucky Barry of Doheny and eventual winner Steve Newton of Oceanside. The weekend conditions consisted of everything mother nature could drum up from rough wind-chopped waves on Saturday to choice 3 to 6 foot glassy peelers on Sunday. The conditions for the final were the perfect backdrop for classic longboard surfing.
This year’s event consisted of two competitive surfing areas that were judged simultaneously by two separate judging stations. The configuration enabled over 350 contestants from over 18 Longboard Coalition Teams to surf and work their way to the finals on Sunday afternoon.
The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association has held the Gathering of the Tribes surf event for 13 years and sets the tone for the coming year of club competition. This year’s program was no exception. Jack Sutter, Doheny Longboard Club President, stated,” This year’s event was especially exciting because we were able to add a Stand Up Paddle (SUP) division that showed just how far the sport has come with their exceptional wave surfing abilities”.
The Coalition of Surfing Clubs (CSC) is an international organization that represents the interests of surfing clubs throughout California and the world. It acts as a united voice to address issues related to coastal water quality, beach access, development, and legislative policy. The Coalition represents over 10,000 surfers of all ages and exists for the betterment of the citizenship of the surfer, to improve clean water locally and globally and to promote the sport of surfing.
The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association is an organization comprised of individuals dedicated to the enjoyment of board surfing in a clean and natural environment. October Sessions - 2008

October was a month to remember. A perfect combination of swell, sun, heat and more swell. The old surfer adage “you should have been here an hour ago” rippled through the packed parking lots of every surfing location we hold near and dear. It was “Bitchen” to coin a phrase – a complete top to bottom wonderful surf month. For each of us lucky enough to share a few, or to just watch it unfold, California was at its best for much of the month. The swells of October 2008 were a poignant reminder of just how lucky we are to live here and enjoy the moments of purity that only great waves and times can provide. Here’s to hoping the next months are even better!!!

The program offers a great mix of spectacular competitive longboarding, a variety beach activities and support for several worthwhile charities.

Tribute to Bud Browne Packs them in at the Surfing Heritage Foundation
Bud lived most of his life in Orange County and was inducted into the International Surfing Hall of Fame in 1991 and the Huntington Beach Surfing Walk of Fame in 1996. While a Lifeguard at Venice Beach, CA, he began shooting footage on 8 and 16 millimeter cameras in the late 1940s. He made his "underwater housing" that enabled him to be right in the wave with the surfers taking the tumbles right along with them in a "wipeout". He screened his first film, the 45-minute-long "Hawaii Surfing Movies," in California beach towns in 1953. Bud made handmade posters that he nailed to telephone poles near local surf spots, he debuted his first film, at John Adams Middle School in Santa Monica in 1953. Admission cost 65 cents. Bud would play taped music and do a "live" narration while running the projector. The career of a surf filmmaker was now born.
Local filmmakers such as, Bruce Brown of Endless Summer and John Severson founder of Surfer Magazine followed in Buds footsteps. Bruce Brown a longtime admirer of his film's, went to Bud to asked his permission to film surfers as well and Bud told him to go for it!
The evening at the Surfing Heritage hosted a number of Bud's friends and fans all shared stories amongst themselves as well as hearing special tributes from Greg Noll, Linda Benson, Anna Moore, and a tape presentation by Greg MacGilliveray of 5 Summer Stories fame.

Velzy event this weekend
The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association's (DLSA) annual Dale Velzy Surf Classic and Luau will be held this Saturday, September 20th, at legendary Doheny State Beach, Dana Point, California.
“Down at Doheny where the surfers all go” is a famous line from the Surfaris' tune about the surfing life-style. Nothing could be more true than this Saturday when the 19th Annual Dale Velzy Surf Classic features a classic longboard surf contest, a traditional Luau with Polynesian dancing and a live band.
The event honors one of the most famous surfers and surfboard shapers of all time, Dale Velzy. DLSA has had the honor of producing this venue for 19 years and has continued its homage to Dale Velzy since he passed away in 2005. This event is open to the public and is for all surfers who enjoy the same things that Dale enjoyed; having fun with friends and family. It is in this spirit that DLSA holds this annual event so that everyone can enjoy the surf contest, luau, dancing under the stars and having a great time at Doheny.
The event kicks off with the surf contest at 6:30 a.m. The Luau festivities begin at 3:00 p.m. followed closely by the Polynesian review, awards ceremony, raffles and then on to the dancing. It’s great fun for everyone.

Surfing Heritage Foundation
kicks off summer film series
The Surfing Heritage Foundation was filled to capacity last Friday evening as they introduced their first film in a series of outdoor summer surf movies. The featured film was Water Man starring big wave legends and board sports innovators Laird Hamilton, Gerry Lopez and Dave Kalama. All three surfers were on hand to talk about the film to hundreds of guests and surf industry VIPs.
In a few short years from its beginning, the Foundation has quickly become one of the premier gathering places for surfing exhibitions, films and educational programs. The summer film series started three years ago as a fund raiser for the Foundation. One of three Water Man’s film directors, Jeff Hornbaker, stated, “I like the history and energy here at the Foundation and we hope that our film creates its own piece of history as well”.
Dave Kalama, who stars in the film and also designs and builds his own equipment said that when he walked through the doors of the Foundation for the first time he felt he had stepped into a time machine. “For me being around all of this history is like seeing and touching Chuck Yeager’s NASA space suit. There are a million great ideas and solutions to wave riding here’.
Also on hand were three time World Longboard Surfing Champion and San Clemente resident, Colin McPhillips, and four time Women’s Surfing Champion, Lisa Andersen. Andersen donated one of her championship series surfboards to the Foundation that evening.
The film covered the adventures of a traveling band of surfers as they explored the riding of various surf craft in a variety of surf conditions and locations. It was a great debut to the Foundation’s Summer Film Series.

Big Day for kids and families at 12th annual Doheny Longboard Surfing Association’s Menehune Surf Championships
The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association (DLSA) held its annual Menehune Surfing Championships Saturday, June 28, 2008 at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, Calif. The surf contest was a California classic in every way as families shared a beautiful day at the beach while watching some great surfing. The contest was open to boys and girls with divisions for first timers on up to 17 years of age.
The waves were nice and consistent at Doheny’s classic “Boneyard” surf spot enabling a wide range of surfing styles and maneuvers. A smiling Ian Diamond from Dana Point in the 8 & under division, summed it up best when he said, “I had so much fun and was glad I rode a lot of waves - it was a blast”. Jack Sutter, the DLSA club President, continued "The annual Menehune contest provides the perfect venue for kids to get involved in some friendly surfing competition in a fun environment. The energy they bring to the beach is great”.
Proceeds from the contest help fund several of the DLSA’s ongoing charity outreach programs including the Ronald McDonald House and the local Doheny State Park Interpretive Center.
In addition to surfing the event, there was a BBQ, a messy no-hands watermelon eating contest and great raffle prizes, followed by an awards ceremony. Jack Sutter stated, “At its core, surfing is all about having fun. Through events like this, we hope that kids will cherish their time spent on the beach with their fellow surfing friends and families.”
Surfers competed in 15 minute heats and were scored based on a 10-point system that integrates wave selection, length of ride, surfing moves and style. Judges were all Doheny Longboard members who have a long history of working within this type of scoring system.
The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association is an organization comprised of individuals dedicated to the enjoyment of board surfing in a clean and natural environment. In relation to that philosophy, the DLSA will act as a support group to other organizations with similar views and objectives.

Special to the Dana Point Times
Doheny Longboard Surfing Association holds annual Back to the ’60s Surf Classic
The grand tradition of longboarding came back to life for a brief moment Saturday, June 7 as the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association held its annual Back to the ’60s contest at Doheny State Park.
This year’s event was a fond look back at surfing history. Contestants were required to ride boards made before 1970, and no leashes were allowed. It was a great opportunity to see old-school surfing, a skillful style born of the 1960s era where big, heavy boards ruled the day. An interesting side note was seeing the surfers who actually rode back in the ’60s competing with younger surfers whose only recollection of the style are photos from magazines or old films.
The daylong event showcased an exciting range of classic hang-10s, drop-knee cutbacks and tandem-team competitions, coupled with spectacular wipeouts and assorted odd maneuvers that defied any type of naming convention. Contest conditions were tough with an onshore breeze and extreme tide changes at Doheny’s infamous river-mouth area.
The 70-degree weather, however, made up for the hard surf conditions.
Moving about the beach afforded a great opportunity to see many old boards up close. Some were in excellent condition while others had obviously seen better days. And there were surfboards of all kinds—from local Dana Point–shaped Hobies to boards built by Bob Bolen of the Greek label out of Huntington Beach.
Beyond the boards and classic-style surfboard competition, the event was also a fun way to circle back in time as many contestants wore traditional surf clothes from the ’60s. And after a full day of surfing in the sun, people involved enjoyed a post-event dinner and awards ceremony.

Back to the 60's

DLSA 2008 Back to the 60’s Contest Results
Doheny Longboard Surfing Association holds it’s annual
“Back to the 60’s” Surf Classic
The grand tradition of longboarding came back to life for a brief moment Saturday, June 7th, 2008 as the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association (DLSA) held its annual Back to the 60’s contest at Doheny State Park.
This year’s program was a fond look back at surfing history. Contestants were required to ride boards made before 1970 with no leashes allowed. It was a great opportunity to see old-school surfing, a skillful style born of the 1960’s era where big, heavy boards ruled the day. An interesting side note was seeing surfers who rode back in the 60’s competing with younger surfers who’s only recollection of the style are photos from magazines or old films. The daylong event showcased an exciting range of classic hang-tens, drop-knee cutbacks, Tandem Team competitions coupled with spectacular wipeouts and assorted odd maneuvers that defy any type of naming convention.
This year’s contest featured surfboards from local Dana Point shaped Hobie’s to those built by Bob Bolen of the Greek label out of Huntington Beach. The event was not only a classic surfboard competition but also a fun way to circle back in time as many contestants wore traditional surf clothes from the 60’s.
Moving about the beach afforded a great opportunity to see many old boards up close. Some were in excellent condition while others had obviously seen better days. A great collection of 60’s style surfboards boards and surf gear can also be seen at the San Clemente based Surfing Heritage Foundation. Directions to the Foundation can be found at their website at www.surfingheritage.org.
This year's contest conditions were tough with an onshore breeze and extreme tide changes at Doheny’s infamous Rivermouth area. The 70-degree weather however made up for the hard to surf conditions and everyone involved enjoyed the sunshine and a post event awards dinner ceremony.
The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association is an organization comprised of individuals dedicated to the enjoyment of board surfing in a clean and natural environment. In relation to that philosophy, the DLSA will act as a support group to other organizations with similar views and objectives.

Cardiac Classic

The 2008 running of DLSA’s Cardiac Classic serves up fun!
March 8th was a day to remember. The sun came out early and we all met at Doheny’s infamous Rivermouth area to begin what would become one of our best days of surfing this year. No, the waves were not spectacular but the camaraderie and good vibes were. Friends and families had plenty of great sun for watching the competition and we were blessed with virtually no wind the entire day.
The Cardiac Classic is held every year and is open to all members of DLSA. This is a traveling event and held in all types of weather, all types of conditions and locations, even down to Baja a couple of years ago. No matter if it’s rain or shine - we take to the waves.
From a competitors perspective our club’s motto, “Surfings a dance and the wave always leads”, could not have been more true during this year’s classic. You really had to let the wave lead and take your best options to place well in your heats. At times there were plenty of waves to go around and at other times you had to position yourself where you felt you could pick up some points. In every heat a few choice sets would lumber through and if you had luck on your shoulder you just might score a nice long ride.
Highlights from my perspective were the well matched Mens A class and the Womens A final that showcased great surfing from everyone. The Junior Men featured a broad spectrum of surfing styles and ages. We had kids at 11 years old holding their own against 29 year olds. It was really fun to watch. I remember my youngest son Deano saying to me once he saw who he was in the final with “O my gosh dad that guy has a beard”!!!
