kicks off summer film series
The Surfing Heritage Foundation was filled to capacity last Friday evening as they introduced their first film in a series of outdoor summer surf movies. The featured film was Water Man starring big wave legends and board sports innovators Laird Hamilton, Gerry Lopez and Dave Kalama. All three surfers were on hand to talk about the film to hundreds of guests and surf industry VIPs.
In a few short years from its beginning, the Foundation has quickly become one of the premier gathering places for surfing exhibitions, films and educational programs. The summer film series started three years ago as a fund raiser for the Foundation. One of three Water Man’s film directors, Jeff Hornbaker, stated, “I like the history and energy here at the Foundation and we hope that our film creates its own piece of history as well”.
Dave Kalama, who stars in the film and also designs and builds his own equipment said that when he walked through the doors of the Foundation for the first time he felt he had stepped into a time machine. “For me being around all of this history is like seeing and touching Chuck Yeager’s NASA space suit. There are a million great ideas and solutions to wave riding here’.
Also on hand were three time World Longboard Surfing Champion and San Clemente resident, Colin McPhillips, and four time Women’s Surfing Champion, Lisa Andersen. Andersen donated one of her championship series surfboards to the Foundation that evening.
The film covered the adventures of a traveling band of surfers as they explored the riding of various surf craft in a variety of surf conditions and locations. It was a great debut to the Foundation’s Summer Film Series.
