Timmy Turner and Second Thoughts at the Surfing Heritage Foundation

August 2009, San Clemente, CA – Timmy Turner, Director of the award winning surf film, Second Thoughts, will appear at the Surfing Heritage Foundation’s Friday Afternoon Surf Film Series on August 28th at 3 pm. Turner, local soul surfer from Huntington Beach, has made the waters of Indo his home away from home. Second Thoughts was a Surfer Magazine Surfer Poll Awards Best Movie winner.

Alone on an uninhabited Indonesian island in the middle of nowhere, Timmy and his friends, Brett Swartz and Travis Potter, are dropped off for a month. Once there, they have "second thoughts" about their month-long island stay. While braving the elements with little food and water, what follows is some of the most amazing surf footage on the sickest reefs in Indo.

Turner's talent in surfing and filmmaking has impressed fans around the world. In 2004, after the devastating earthquake in Indonesia, Timmy, Kristian McQue, and Dustin Humphries delivered 75 tons of relief supplies to the islands located at the epicenter of the quake. This humanitarian effort was documented in the film, Tsunami Diaries: Voyage To The Epicenter.

20th Annual Dale Velzy Surf Classic and Luau dates selected

The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association’s (DLSA) 20th annual Dale Velzy Surf Classic and Luau dates have been selected. Based on the best tides, swell predictions and the luck of the draw the classic venue will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at legendary Doheny State Beach, Dana Point, California.
Open to the public, the event honors one of the most famous surfers and surfboard shapers of all time, Dale Velzy who passed away in 2005. The club has been honored to produce this event for all surfers who enjoy the same things that Dale enjoyed, having fun with friends and family. It is in that spirit that the DLSA holds this annual event so that everyone in attendance can enjoy everything from the surf contest, the luau, Polynesian review, and dancing under the stars at Doheny with a live band.
“The 20th edition of this surf classic has a very special place in the hearts of all Doheny Longboard Members. Dale Velzy was an extremely special person to us all and this program is our yearly tribute to one of the true pioneers of the sport” said, Nyles Schafhauser, DLSA President.

This year’s event kicks-off with the surf contest at 6:30 a.m. The Luau festivities begin at 3:00 p.m. followed closely by the Polynesian review, awards ceremony, raffles and then dancing. It’s great fun for everyone.

Hanging Five - OC Premiere

If you’re a surf art fan, head down to the Surfing Heritage Foundation at about 3 p.m. on Friday for the Orange County premiere of “Hanging Five“, a new film on surf artists by director Chris Cutri.

The film follows five artists who all happen to be surfers. The film documents their work and looks at different aspects of their lives, and how those experiences have impacted their work. The film also looks at why the surf culture embraces and supports the arts.

The artists include: Andy Davis, Tyler Warren, Julie Goldstein, Alex Knost (of Newport Beach), Wolfgang Bloch.

On hand will be Chris Cutri the director and artists confirmed at this time are Tyler Warren and Julie Goldstein. Warren “Pickle,” is a young Orange County surfer and is now becoming a well-known artist, whose work has been exhibited from Japan to Brazil. His work is stylized with deep richness and lighthearted charm with many within the surf community becoming collectors and fans.

Seats are $3. The afternoon will offer an awesome glimpse into the lives of surf artists and how the ocean and surfing inspire their work. Snacks, candy, and beverages will be available for purchase. Tickets are available at the door at the Surfing Heritage Foundation.

We had a nice south swell while we were on Oahu. A steady 4 to 6 feet and off shore conditions. Not as many people surfing this year as in the past summers as the economy has certainly put a damper on travel. I attended the Hawaiian Surf Auction and saw over 100 surf related items change hands with over $750,000 going through the auctioneer’s gavel. A Matt Kivlin board went for $39,000 breaking the bar set 2 years ago for an 11-foot Buzzy Trent Model "Surfboards Hawaii" elephant gun that sold for $33,000.

With 379 registered bidders and thousands of interested viewers, it was the most well received auction to date. Shaped - The Movie

1961: SURFING | It must have seemed like a good idea at the time, but Honolulu Police Officer Mitchell Chang didn't think so. He pulled this unidentified cycling surfer "over to the side" on Kalakaua Avenue for a lecture on safety. He agreed the man had an ingenious way of getting himself and his surfboard to the beach, but advised caution. The cyclist was seen afterward walking down the street with the board under one arm and maneuvering the bike with the other.

Annual Doheny Longboard Menehune Surf Championships Brings Out The Best In Kids


The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association (DLSA) held its13th annual menehune contest this past Saturday at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, Calif. The fun filled day long contest showcased exceptional surfing and sportsmanship by every competitor.

“This is a great way to start off our summer at Doheny Beach and the perfect venue for kids to get involved in some friendly surfing competition in a no pressure, have fun arena”. Said Mark Calkins, the DLSA clubs event director.

Proceeds from the contest help fund several of the organization's ongoing charity outreach programs including the Ronald McDonald House and the local Doheny State Park Interpretive Center.

Calkins added “At its core, surfing is all about having fun. Through events like this, we hope that kids will cherish their time spent on the beach with their fellow surfing friends and families.”

Surfing Heritage Foundations Light Table Series This Friday

June 2009, San Clemente, CA. The Surfing Heritage Foundation will be presenting some of the icons of surf photography in the last of its three-part series of the Light Table Sessions this Friday, June 26. Grant Ellis, photo editor of Surfer magazine, will share some of the images that have earned Surfer the reputation as one of the leading surf magazines worldwide.

Ellis will be sharing an amazing collection of work from over the past 50 years of Surfer magazine’s history. The audience will get to view some of Surfer’s archives showing past images that were on the cutting-edge of surf photography for their time and current photos still renown for their breath-taking imagery around the world.

Steve Pezman, publisher of The Surfers Journal, states, “The photo editors are the generals of this specialized battlefield and in the rare occasion that they consent to put on slide shows, it becomes an unspoken challenge for each to present the most stunning statement possible on the state-of-the-art of surfing and surf photography.”

We will also have the new Surfing Yearbook available for purchase at the special discount price of $50 (includes tax), it normally retails for $65. Just when the waves were getting good comes this news.....

SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea may fire a long-range ballistic missile toward Hawaii in early July, a Japanese news report said Thursday, as Russia and China urged the regime to return to international disarmament talks on its rogue nuclear program.
The missile, believed to be a Taepodong-2 with a range of up to 4,000 miles (6,500 kilometers), would be launched from North Korea's Dongchang-ni site on the northwestern coast, said the Yomiuri daily, Japan's top-selling newspaper. It cited an analysis by the Japanese Defense Ministry and intelligence gathered by U.S. reconnaissance satellites.

Dewey Weber Longboard Classic to Feature Competitors from Around the World on June 13th

DANA POINT, Calif., June 02 – A special day of surfing is about to unfold as the annual Dewey Weber Longboard Classic kicks off on Saturday, June 13 at Doheny State Park. The event will celebrate Dewey’s legacy and showcases highly competitive longboard surfing. Surfers from as far away as Japan will be competing at this year’s event. A highlight will be the always fun to watch Mini Grom expression session. Also, this year’s program is part of the Doheny State Beach Surf-A-Rama where the State Park features over 50 surf inspired vendors. Items for sale will include surfboards, books, paintings, jewelry, and classic surf items.
The program kicks off at 6:30 a.m. at Doheny’s infamous Boneyard surfing area. This particular surf spot features both a right and left hand surf break that enables longboarders to really showcase their moves while also providing great spectator viewing. A special Saturday night awards dinner and beach party will be the social highlight of the contest beginning at 6:30 p.m. This evening event under the stars at Doheny will feature raffle drawings and prizes with live music by Jasso and Garcia.

Background. . . A Little Bit of History:
The late 1950s found Dewey Weber christened the first "hot-dogger” of surfing and one of the world's best surfers. Dewey began manufacturing surfboards in the early 1960s and became one of the largest surfboard manufacturers.

Since longboards were the ONLY boards known in the surfing world, Dewey's designs and surfing style were in high demand. This "little man on wheels," with his flamboyant style, had such an impact on surfing that Surfing Magazine proclaimed him the "father of modern surfing." Dewey's surfing style was an impetus to the shorter and lighter boards now seen in the short board market. His manufacturing designs pushed the envelope of surfboard design. In the late 1960s short boards were becoming the "in thing" with the younger crowd and longboarding took a back seat.

In 1981, a growing number of people once again began ordering longboards and, because of his passion for the longboard style and attitude, Dewey decided to reunite the top competitive surfers from the heyday of longboard surfing.

These surfers from the mid-1960s were invited to take a trip down memory lane with a fun day of competition at the Manhattan Beach Pier. Hundreds of surfers and observers showed up that day in May of 1981. Dewey's vision of a "surf reunion" was a thunderous success and helped open the door to the resurgence of longboard surfing.

Over the next five years, the Dewey Weber Longboard Classic became a premier event, attracting major sponsors and media coverage. This event was covered on live television by the major network news stations in Los Angeles. In 1982, PM Magazine San Diego did a piece for their local viewers and found it so successful they syndicated it for nationwide viewing. By the second year of the event, a full press contingent gathered on the beach which included publications as notable as People Magazine.

The event continued annually through 1986 until many constraints were put on this type of venue. The Dewey Weber Longboard Classic was shelved and resurrected in 2001, harkening back to a golden era of surfing whose glow still shines in the minds of those who lived it, and those who know it only through the stories that have been passed down.

World Skin Cancer Foundation’s Sean and Skippy Slater Invitational Surf Contest Set For San Clemente, May 30th

COCOA BEACH, Fla. (May 6, 2009) -- The Sean and Skippy Slater Invitational Surf Contest presented by Ocean Potion – the World Skin Cancer Foundation’s inaugural West Coast awareness and fund-raising event for the fight against skin cancer – will take place May 30th at San Clemente Pier in San Clemente, California.

The Slater Invitational will be highlighted by the participation of WCT surfing professionals, in addition to dozens of other top men and women short and long boarders from around the world. The weekend event will also feature a dinner party and auction with live music Saturday night at the Surfing Heritage Foundation in San Clemente.

Skin cancer is the fastest growing type of cancer in the United States and the Foundation’s mission is to build awareness for the disease while educating the public on how to enjoy a safer outdoor lifestyle. The organization conducts several recreational and sports special events each year, all designed to educate people about the causes and prevention of skin cancer while safely enjoying the outdoors. “Back to the 60’s” Surf Classic on June 6th

Retro Surf event is open to anyone with a classic longboard


The grand tradition of longboarding will come back to life on Saturday, June 6th, 2009 as the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association (DLSA) will hold its annual Back to the 60’s surf contest at Doheny State Park.

This year’s program will be a fond look back at surfing history. The retro contest is open to any contestant with a board made before 1970. Remember no leashes will be allowed. This contest is also a great opportunity to see old-school surfing, a skillful style born of the 1960’s era where big, heavy boards ruled the day. The daylong event will showcase an exciting range of classic hang-tens, drop-knee cutbacks, coupled with the always spectacular Hodad wipeouts and assorted odd maneuvers that will surely defy description.

In past events the contest featured classic surfboards from local Dana Point shaped Hobie’s to those built by Bob Bolen of the Greek label out of Huntington Beach. The event is not only a classic surfboard competition but also a fun way to circle back in time as many contestants will wear traditional surf clothes from the 60’s.

This year's contest will be held at Doheny’s infamous Rivermouth area. Everyone involved is invited to a post event awards dinner ceremony that will be Ohana style (pot luck). So bring your own food and some to share and enjoy the day.

While taking a dump run to drop off accumulated stuff - I spotted a Vintage Model Hobie pearing out of a trash heap saying "Help me, Help me" I still want to go! Turns out that it's a Terry Martin shaped 9.2 Vintage Model that beside the obvious war wounds was still reasonably sound. It'll be perfect for the bumper pool crowds of summer...

The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association (DLSA) will be holding its 13th Annual Menehune Contest on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, Calif. The contest begins promptly at 7 AM PDT and is open to boys and girls of all ages with divisions for 8 and under on up to 17 years of age. Hundreds of young competitors are expected to participate. "The annual Menehune contest provides the perfect venue for kids that would like to get involved in some friendly surfing competition in a “no pressure, have fun” arena. The energy that the Menehune’s bring to the beach is contagious”, said Jack Sutter, President of the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association.

The Menehune Championships has a long history of supporting charities, while also providing a fun-filled day at the beach for participants and observers alike. California and Hawaiian surf personalities visit the Surfing Heritage Foundation


As part of a promotional tour introducing Primo Beer to California, (Primo is one of the Surfing Heritage Foundation’s sponsors this year) the Surfing Heritage Foundation hosted one of the tour stops. In addition to the visit at the Heritage, Primo also held events at Hapa J’s and the OC Tavern in San Clemente last Thursday evening April 30th.

As part of the tour, Primo had a specially outfitted tour bus built to carry Hawaiian legends and what Primo called big “Bruddahs”. This contingent included Keoni Watson, Hawaiian Big Wave Champion; Rusty Keaulana (Russ K), three-time Longboard World Champion and part of the first family of Hawai’i surfing, Spam, Primo’s official “Bombucha”; and Lanai, a top DJ on 98.5 in Oahu.

The Surfing Heritage had California legends Paul Strauch, Dick Metz, Mike Marshell, Henry Ford and Ron Sizemore on hand to greet the touring crew from Primo and to accept a longboard donation from Rusty Keaulana that is now a part of the Foundations collection.

The Surfing Heritage Foundation invites you to a special mid-week - mid-day event!
We know this is during the "Work Week" But, this could be fun and it's only for an hour!

On April 30th at 10 a.m. you are invited to a special longboard donation to the Surfing Heritage Foundation from three time world champion Rusty Keaulana (Russ K). Plus, we'll have some cool Hawaiian and Californian surfing legends on hand to also spread the Aloha spirit.

On the bus will be Primo's big "Bruddahs" including Keoni Watson, Hawaiian Big Wave Champion; Rusty Keaulana (Russ K), three-time Longboard World Champion and part of the first family of Hawai'i surfing; Spam, Primo's official "Bombucha"; and Lanai, a top DJ on 98.5 in Oahu. The Bruddahs will spread a taste of Hawai'i with California natives Brad Gerlach, International Big Wave Champion and acclaimed surfer and filmmaker, Chris Malloy.

It'll be a fun one-hour event that's your chance to meet some new friends and be a part of a new donation - we hope to see you at 10 a.m. April 30th at the Heritage.

- Primo Woody Bus Tour From Santa Cruz To San Diego To Feature Big Wave Champions and Hawaiian Ambassadors or “Bruddahs” -

Primo Island Lager, Hawaii’s original beer, dating back to 1897, will bring the aloha spirit and Hawaiian big “Bruddahs” to California for a 10-day tour of top coastal towns and surfing spots. Dubbed “The Primo Big Bruddah Tour,” two specially outfitted Primo vehicles, a classic VW Double Cab and a custom woody bus, will hit Orange County on April 30. Some of Hawai’i’s most notorious “Bruddahs” ("brother" or "pal" in Hawaiian pidgin) are coming direct from Hawai’i to help spread the word about Primo Island Lager and some “aloha spirit.”

On April 30, Rusty Keaulana will be donating a long board that he rode at the world famous Bonzai Pipeline in 2001 to the Surfing Heritage Foundation
• At Surfing Heritage 10:00 a.m to 11:00 a.m.

Tom Blake is the obvious link between the ancient South Pacific waterman and the twentieth century Anglo waterman. Not only did he precede most other Anglo visitors to Hawaii that surfed, he understood and adopted the Aloha frame-of-mind and possessed the unique ability to produce water craft in harmony with the previous one thousand years of surfing's progression.

Blake placed surfboards, paddleboards, and life saving equipment within reach of the interested athlete, lifeguard, and seaside visitor. In Blake's life, there was no separation between religion, surfing, swimming, building surfboards, eating, and exercise. At the time, no one guessed that his unorthodox life style would one day become the accepted standard for the beach culture.

Blake's early published work, both word and photographic, awoke new generations of surfers and educated them to the vast richness of their surfing heritage. His pioneering efforts continue to inspire today's surfers with the knowledge that their lifestyle is one firmly seated in traditions both intelligent and legitimate for generations to come.

Along the trials to Trestles you will find...

Phoenix canariensis is a species in the palm family, Arecaceae, native to the Canary Islands. It is a relative of Phoenix dactylifera, the true date palm. It is a large solitary palm, 10-20(-40) m tall. The leaves are pinnate, 4-6 m long, with 80-100 leaflets on each side of the central rachis. The fruit is an oval, yellow to orange drupe 2 cm long and 1 cm diameter and containing a single large seed; the fruit pulp is edible but too thin to be worth eating.

The most used common name in English is "Canary Island Date Palm". The common name in Spanish speaking countries and in the Canary Islands is "Palmera Canaria".
