Shaped - The Movie

SHAPED, The Movie by Walter Georis, is making its premiere as part of the Surfing Heritage Foundation's Summer Surf Film Series. On Saturday, August 1, SHAPED follows surf industry pioneers as they tell their stories of the halcyon days of the 1960s, a seminal time that would come to capture the essence of the surf industry as it's known today. Featuring early and contemporary legends such as Robert August, Mickey Muñoz, The Meistrell brothers, Corky Carroll, Joyce Hoffman, Henry Ford, Mike Doyle, Bing Copeland, Terry Martin, John Peck, Bruce, Dan, and Wes Brown, Bill Stewart, Skip Frye, Rusty Preisendorfer, Tom Morey, Bill Hamilton, Greg Noll, Mike Haley, Renny Yater, Gene and Peter Van Dyke, Robert "Wingnut" Weaver, Randy French, Danny Brawner, Pat O'Connell, Bill Stewart, Jennifer Smith, Jim Driver, Evan Slater, Doug Haut, Nat Young, Pat O'Neill, and Sam George.

Filmmaker Walter Georis whose band The Sandals, brought us the iconic theme music from The Endless Summer, has also been working on a documentary of his band, and we will have a number of very special, limited edition pre-release copies available for you to purchase at this event.

The Summer Film Series will be held at the Foundation's cultural heritage facility located at 110 Calle Iglesia, San Clemente, CA 92672. Be sure and arrive early to allow time to view our special shaping exhibit of surfboards designed by Carl Ekstrom and Thomas Meyerhoffer, Jim Driver photographs, and surfboards from Casa Romantica's "The Masters Of Shaping," their first-annual surfboard shaping and art exhibit. Surfing Heritage Foundations Light Table Series This Friday

June 2009, San Clemente, CA. The Surfing Heritage Foundation will be presenting some of the icons of surf photography in the last of its three-part series of the Light Table Sessions this Friday, June 26. Grant Ellis, photo editor of Surfer magazine, will share some of the images that have earned Surfer the reputation as one of the leading surf magazines worldwide.

Ellis will be sharing an amazing collection of work from over the past 50 years of Surfer magazine’s history. The audience will get to view some of Surfer’s archives showing past images that were on the cutting-edge of surf photography for their time and current photos still renown for their breath-taking imagery around the world.

Steve Pezman, publisher of The Surfers Journal, states, “The photo editors are the generals of this specialized battlefield and in the rare occasion that they consent to put on slide shows, it becomes an unspoken challenge for each to present the most stunning statement possible on the state-of-the-art of surfing and surf photography.”

We will also have the new Surfing Yearbook available for purchase at the special discount price of $50 (includes tax), it normally retails for $65. Two of the book’s contributors, Paul Holmes (author of the Velzy, Bing, and forthcoming Dick Brewer biographies), and PT (former world champ), will be on hand to personalize your copy.

The final Light Table Session series will be held at The Foundation’s cultural heritage facility located at 110 Calle Iglesia, San Clemente, CA 92672. World Skin Cancer Foundation’s Sean and Skippy Slater Invitational Surf Contest Set For San Clemente, May 30th

COCOA BEACH, Fla. (May 6, 2009) -- The Sean and Skippy Slater Invitational Surf Contest presented by Ocean Potion – the World Skin Cancer Foundation’s inaugural West Coast awareness and fund-raising event for the fight against skin cancer – will take place May 30th at San Clemente Pier in San Clemente, California.

The Slater Invitational will be highlighted by the participation of WCT surfing professionals, in addition to dozens of other top men and women short and long boarders from around the world. The weekend event will also feature a dinner party and auction with live music Saturday night at the Surfing Heritage Foundation in San Clemente.

Skin cancer is the fastest growing type of cancer in the United States and the Foundation’s mission is to build awareness for the disease while educating the public on how to enjoy a safer outdoor lifestyle. The organization conducts several recreational and sports special events each year, all designed to educate people about the causes and prevention of skin cancer while safely enjoying the outdoors. Most events also offer free skin cancer screenings for all participants and attendees and local Doctors will be conducting free and private screenings Saturday, May 30th from noon to 4pm, during the Slater Invitational

Surfing Heritage Foundation Roasts its own

1st Annual Event Honor’s Founders Dick Metz and Spencer Croul

This past Sunday evening the Surfing Heritage Foundation started a tradition that’s bound to go down in the annuals of surf lore as one of the most irreverent evenings of all time. Perhaps the infamous Master of Ceremonies, Robert “Wingnut” Weaver, said it best, “"This is the first ever roast in the sport of surfing and it’s about time we cooked some of our sport's most cherished characters!"

And cook it was as surf legends Greg Noll, Bruce Brown, and Hobie Alter skewered the roasted in a rousing session of jokes, tall tales and antidotes about their lives both true and complete fiction. Nothing was sacred and nothing was sparred. It was a very special evening that was both humorous and generous at the same time. The audience was a broad cross section of some of surfing’s greatest pioneers from the east coast to Hawaii who all shared a great evening together.

Bruce Brown, who created the iconic surf film The Endless Summer, spoke about how Dick Metz was the original inspiration for the film having traveled around the world years before. Big wave legend Greg Noll reminisced about how Spencer Croul searched and found the first surfboard Greg had ever shaped and gave it back to him as a gesture of friendship.

It was truly a great beginning to what will become an annual fundraiser for the Surfing Heritage Foundation.

About the Roasted:
Surfing Heritage Founder, Dick Metz, is a long time surfer from Laguna Beach, who tipped legendary surfing documentary producer, Bruce Brown about South Africa, where he filmed the most spectacular segment for his seminal 1965 film, "The Endless Summer". Later, Dick partnered with Hobie Alter to establish Hobie Sports, the first successful chain of surf & sport retail outlets. During those years, Dick began collecting the historical surfboards that help comprise the nucleus of the current Foundation collection. Metz established the 501(c)(3) foundation in 1998, as a lasting home for his collection.

Co-founder, Spencer Croul, a Newport Beach surfer and active surfboard collector whose family founded Behr Paint, teamed with Metz, and they combined their collections into the largest, most significant in the world. Spencer also provides the facility in which the Foundation currently operates. The on-going contributions of both men, as well as a prominent Board, dedicated staff, and a host of volunteers have brought The Surfing Heritage Foundation to its current position as the surfing world's most renowned archiving and preservation effort.

Bustin Down the door opens Surfing Heritage Foundation's 2009 season

San Clemente, California. Surfing greats Shaun Tomson, Peter “PT” Townend, Ian Cairns and Michael Tomson were on hand to share the spotlight this past Tuesday evening discussing their Hawaiian exploits of the seventies. The topic of the evening was their documentary film called “Bustin down the door”. The film captures how this group of Australians and South Africans set out to change the world of surfing by bringing to it a higher level of professionalism, thus beginning the shift toward the billion dollar surf industry we know today.
Three decades have past when this team first landed in Hawaii to stake their claim as the best surfers in the world. Through essays written by themselves and wonderful photography from the lens of Dan Merkel, Oahu’s North Shore is captured as time machine of the sport.
The evening that was free to the public and featured a slideshow, Q&A, book and DVD signing, and limited-edition framed photographs featured in the book.
