19th Annual Dale Velzy Surf Classic and Luau dates selected

Dana Point, Calif., August 18, 2008 – The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association (DLSA) is gearing up for one of its most popular surfing events of the year - the 19th Annual Dale Velzy Surf Classic and Luau. The one day event will be September 20, 2008 at Doheny State Beach and will feature a wide range of surfing events from classic longboarding, stand up paddle surfing and tandem surfing followed by a full Polynesian review, luau and dancing.

Each year the DLSA holds the Annual Dale Velzy Surf Classic honoring one of surfing’s most legendary figures, Dale Velzy, who passed away in 2005. Velzy was surfing's first commercial surfboard shaper. Throughout the mid-‘50s, he was the undisputed king of surf retail, with a surf team that included Dewey Weber, Miki Dora, Donald Takayama, Mike Doyle and Mickey Munoz.

Jack Sutter, the DLSA President, stated, “Dale Velzy had tremendous energy and zest for many things including, anything to do with surfing, hot rods, horses and just plain having fun. Having fun is what this event is all about”. Sutter further states, ” This year we plan on incorporating a wider range of surfing competition including stand up paddle surfing for the first time. Our Luau is a full Polynesian review with a fire dancer, great traditional island food followed by dancing to a live band under the stars at Doheny.”

The surfing events start promptly at 6:30 a.m. and the Luau party kicks off at 3 p.m. Proceeds from the event are used to support the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association’s many charities.
